Don’t Live as a Memory of Yourself – A Poem About Reconnecting With Yourself

Reconnecting With Yourself poetry

Introduction

We spend so much of our lives becoming what the world expects us to be that somewhere along the way, we forget who we were before all of it. We lose pieces of ourselves in expectations, relationships, fear, and the noise around us. We become so busy living the life ahead of us. We forget to ask what happened to the person we once were.

This is where the journey of reconnecting with yourself begins, not by becoming someone new, but by turning inward and listening to the parts of you that have been quiet for far too long. Reconnecting with yourself poetry is not merely about remembering who you used to be. It is about understanding what you lost along the way, recognising what still lives within you, and finding the courage to choose yourself again.

This poem, “Don’t Live as a Memory of Yourself,” is a reflection on that journey. It is the journey back to the person you were, the person you are, and the person you are still becoming.

Don’t Live as a Memory of Yourself Poem

I try really hard not to lose myself in the crowd,
Try to find those pieces of me that were long forgotten and dusted in my childhood,

I try to find the parts of me that were broken,
Those that were tainted and mashed when I was naive,

As I have grown up, I find myself struggling to hold them together,
I find it hard to find the pieces of me that are supposed to be mine,

The world goes around being insensitive and selfish, like it’s the bread and butter they eat to sustain their bodies.
But how do I survive in such a world where the parts where I was supposed to put myself first, without any guilt, were lost long ago,

Tell me, how do I put myself first?
How do I stop absorbing people’s negative energy and let them be their imperfect selves?

How do I stop being like the person in a demonic possession of all but myself?

We plan and plan,
We are too scared to follow our hearts,
To give a shot at our dreams,

Yet, this anxiety and frustration never really let us give in to anything but our inner callings, do they?

Then, why do you settle in that shrinking you?
Why do you let your life be meager?
Why do you remain merely a beggar?

Why do you see all but fear, depression, anxiety, and doubts?
Why do you see all but love and acceptance for yourself?
Why do you see all but growth and wisdom from the loss and the mistakes that you made?

Why do you put so much mind into all?

Why don’t you put all but freedom?
Freedom from your past,
Freedom from your future,
Freedom from doubts,

Why don’t you put all but love for yourself?

The love that knows no boundaries,
The love that knows no conditions,
No reasons,

The love that is boundless and infinite, like this life,
The love that brings into you a feeling that you can’t put into words,
Why don’t you see for yourself what it is in you,

Why don’t you see yourself through your eyes and stop letting this world blind you?

Why don’t you find yourself lost in the crowd, in people’s expectations of you, in their acceptance of you?

Why don’t you drop it all?

Why don’t you go and look at yourself in the mirror and find yourself?
Look at yourself like the biggest treasure you can ever ask for.

Why don’t you look at yourself in this very moment?
Why do you find yourself lost in the future and the past?

Do you even know that you exist?
Do you exist?

Can you acknowledge that you merely live as a memory of yourself?

If you can’t bring all your attention to anywhere but in this very moment,
Then do you exist at all?

Isn’t this a sad life till our deathbeds?

Aren’t there better ways to pursue survival and our primal needs?
Do we not forge our own paths?
That can also be the stepping stones for others to walk on?

Or do we just become the mindless sheep in the herd?
Here, do we not bring our minds,
Or do we only use it for living our lives as a shadow of ourselves?

Don’t you feel that you need to be anywhere but in yourself?
Don’t you feel that you need to do what comes effortlessly out of you,
In those moments when you are with yourself,

The work that doesn’t feel like work at all!
The work that you don’t try to do,
The work that just happens,
The work that is beyond logic,
Beyond method,

It just flows out of you without even trying,
Maybe it is practice or just your sacred place,
Again, let’s drop our minds here,

As certain things are beyond its comprehension,
We were given this life to live,
To create,
To live it happily,

As slaves or masters, completely your choice,
As they say, do not let this world harden you,

As they say, listen to your inner voices,
As they shall go on screaming until you listen to them,

Some of us are not meant to walk others’ paths. We are supposed to carve out the path for others.

Even if this life was harsh on you,
Even if it does not make sense,

Even if it becomes difficult to choose between yourself and others,
When your being torments you for being selfish,
For saving what you have for yourself,
For choosing you over others,
Even your loved ones,
Then always choose yourself,

Keep your hand on your heart,
Take a deep breath,

Know that your people won’t let you feel guilty for choosing yourself. They would rather encourage it. They won’t let you burn for them, as it would burn pieces of them as well.

Also, trust your heart,
As it won’t build walls around the ones you shouldn’t be building in the first place,

Treasure your heart,
Treasure your being,
Treasure your sensitivity,
Treasure your selflessness and kindness,

As you will find your tribe,
Where you can safely spread all your colourful wings,
Without having to lose their flight in the process,

Be patient for those who shall hold your hand,
As you fly,
Who shall never pull you down,

Together, you shall fly higher and higher,
Together, you shall seek the deepest layers of your being,

Until all that remains is both of you,
In your core essence,
Without separation,
Without boundaries,

Where it feels like magic,
Where it feels like it emanates from the same source,
Where it feels like you in them,
They in you,

And you feel the wonder that this life is,
Its magic,

And the two of you find it in both of you,
Miracle that this life is,

Then all the pain and loss you endured would seem worthy, as the two of you unfolded as miracles from them.

Tell me, what is it you foresee?
Tell me, do you whine now?

Have you stopped blaming the Universe?
Have you understood the grandeur of your life?

Do you realise how precious your life is?
Not for anyone, but for you and your loved ones,

Now, do you know what the real treasure is?
Now, do you stop looking for it?

Now, do you spread your arms wide, smile, and be grateful for the life that you are blessed with?

Now, do you welcome every moment of your life?
Now, do you welcome life like it is only going to bring you all the wonders that it can?

Now, do you feel the magic in the love that you can feel in you?
Now, do you feel the magic in the love you see in your lover’s eyes for you?

In your family’s care,
In the strength that is in you,
In how you get up every time you fall,
No matter how bad you feel,
You go on,

Where else is the magic?
What else do you seek?

Tell me, isn’t this life but a wonder?
A wonderful ocean in the moonlit sky, with its stars and breeze that brushes through your hair,
In your lover’s arms,
In the caress of their love,

Tell me, where else do you seek your life?
Tell me, isn’t this life?
